Remix Releases Explained
Rights, Royalties & Ownership

Remixes are welcome. What matters is having the right to release the one you made.

Which route you're on

Remixing your own track? No permission needed from anyone. Upload it.

Remixing someone else's track? You need written permission from the rights holder, usually the original artist's label, or the artist themselves if they're independent. An email saying yes is enough. A DM works. Keep a copy of it.

Won a remix contest? You almost certainly already have the rights. Contest rules normally grant the winner permission to release. Check the terms you entered under and hold onto them.

Bootleg or unofficial remix? There's no legitimate route to distribute this one. Stores will pull it, and the original rights holder can claim your earnings. If you love the remix, just ask the artist, independent artists say yes far more often than people expect.

How to credit it

Title it: Original Song Title (Your Name Remix)

  • The original artist stays the primary artist
  • You go in as the remixer, not as the main artist
  • The remix gets its own new ISRC. It's a new recording, not a version of the old one

Get that format right and it passes review without a question. Get it wrong and we'll send it back with the correction spelled out, free to fix, as always.
