What Happens If Someone Claims Your Music?
Rights, Royalties & Ownership

If a claim comes in against your music, a real person on our team tells you who sent it and what it's about, before anything comes down, wherever the law and the store allow. Then you get the chance to answer it.

What we tell you

When a claim reaches us about one of your releases, someone on our team writes to you with:

  • Who sent it
  • What it's about: which release or track, and what the claimant says is wrong, for example that they own the recording, that a sample isn't cleared, or that a cover has no licence
  • What you can do next

It comes from a person, not an automated system.

How you answer

Reply to that email with your side of it. Anything that shows your rights helps: a licence, a contract, a split sheet, a permission email, your project files. We pass it on to the claimant or the store, and keep you posted.

Claims are sometimes simply wrong. If the music is yours, or you have the licence for it, say so and send what shows it.

We're not your lawyer, and we can't represent you if a claim turns into a legal dispute. See What MOOSYC Does and Does Not Handle Legally.

When something can come down first

We'd rather be honest about the limits than promise more than we control:

  • Stores can act on their own. Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube and the other stores run their own rights checks, and they can remove a release or put a claim on it without going through us first. When we hear about it, we tell you what the store said and help you respond.
  • Some legal notices need fast action. A few kinds of legal notice require us to act promptly, and then a release can come down before we've spoken. A person still tells you who sent it and why, as far as the law allows, and you still get the chance to respond.

If we take a release down

If we take one of your releases down, you get a notice from us with the reason. Never a silent removal.
