Distribution Mistakes to Avoid
Guides & Playbooks

None of these are about your music. They're logistics, the part that's easy to get right once someone tells you.

Changing ISRCs when you re-release. Your streams, playlist placements and chart history live on the ISRC, not on the song. Re-uploading an existing track with a fresh ISRC starts it back at zero. Reuse the original.

Spelling your artist name differently across releases. Sam Rivers and SAM RIVERS are two different artists to Spotify, with two profiles and two audiences. Pick one spelling and keep it forever.

Leaving the same release live at two distributors. Duplicates confuse stores, split your streams, and can trigger a takedown of both. Take the old one down after the new delivery lands, not before.

Tagging explicit content wrong. Stores treat the flag differently, and a wrong tag can quietly limit where your song gets surfaced.

Missing the editorial window. Spotify needs a release delivered and pitched at least 7 days before the release date. Deliver the day before and that door is simply closed, the music was fine, the timing wasn't.

Most of what holds independent artists back is operational, not artistic. Every one of these takes a couple of minutes to get right.
